Tom Lee Park will be the new location of a new barbecue contest called “SmokeSlam” to rival the already existing Memphis in May’s World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
It will be held from May 16 until May 18, right around the same time as Memphis in May’s contest from May 15 through May 18 at Liberty Park.
A total of $250,000 in prize money will be allocated to several contestants in different categories.
Jake Cook, radio host for the Nation of Jake, supports the idea of two barbecue contests, especially when it’s headlined as “The World’s Ultimate BBQ Showdown.”
“You got a Riverbeat and a Smokeslam now,” he said. “It kind of sounds like a wrestling move, like a chokeslam. It’s got a cool little wrestling feel.”
