Gunfire erupted early Friday morning resulting in the death of a Memphis Police officer.
A second officer was taken to the hospital and is now in non-critical condition while a third officer was injured but taken care of at the crime scene. One of the other suspects, 17, was injured an in critical condition.
This all occurred at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue around 2 a.m.
Police stated that they received a call about a suspicious vehicle and were shot at as they approached it. That’s when police returned fire, killing the suspect and the officer. The car sped away but were stopped and arrested after two brief foot chases.
Joseph McKinney was confirmed by the MPD to be the officer who was killed.
Police Chief CJ Davis noted that the 18-year-old suspect who was killed in the shooting was arrested back in March and charged with stealing two vehicles. He was subsequently released without bond prior to the Friday morning’s shootings.
