One of the key staple tourist attractions albeit technically illegal to climb, the Haiku Stairs, is set to be torn down this month after the Honolulu City Council unanimously voted in 2021 to remove it.
Also known locally as the Stairway To Heaven, the 3,922 steps going up a mountain in eastern Oahu island has posed a danger to many travelers that are not used to the terrain and instability of the trail.
It has been officially closed to the public since 1987, but with the resurgence of social media combined with the lack of enforcing trespassing charges, the stairs have been generating thousands of tourists each year attempting to climb it.
The Haiku Stairs were built during the second World War by the US Navy in order to reach a radio station designed to transmit radio signals Pacific Ocean Navy Ships.
It was never built with the intention of generating tourists.
