Following a rough debate performance by President Biden with Donald Trump, doubt was cast on the incumbent’s suitability for office. President Biden officially withdrew from the 2024 presidential contest on Sunday, just three weeks after the debate.
With the intention of finishing his term in office, the president promptly supported Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid to unseat Trump.
Biden made the announcement via his X account, stating that he would make an announcement to the nation later this week.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he said in the social media post. “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
He made it clear he would finish his term, and not seek reelection.
This all follows the assassination attempt on President Trump on July 13. The Democratic National Convention is set to start from August 19-22, 2024.
