LOCAL | Family Of Tyre Nichols To Appear In Court In $550M Lawsuit Against Memphis

Following the death of her son, Tyre Nichols, at the hands of former MPD officers, Rowvaughn Wells is suing the City of Memphis, and court proceedings are scheduled for this afternoon.

The city of Memphis and Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis were all included in the $550 million federal civil case.

The case is scheduled to go to trial on January 27, 2025.

Wells alleges that when the Memphis Police Scorpion Unit pulled her son over in January 2023, they used “unjustified force” on him. Of course, all of the arrest was documented in body cam footage that released to the public shortly after Nichols’ death.

The lawsuit’s ultimate goal, according to Ben Crump, the lawyer for the Nichols family, is to purge local communities of police oppression squads, such as the now-defunct Scorpion Unit.

Nichols’ was initially arrested for a traffic violation.
