A dead sperm whale washed up on an Oregon Coast beach close to Florence in November 1970. Officials made the decision to surround it with dynamite and blow it up in order to get rid of it.
It weighed eight tons and was forty-five feet long.
There was a horrible stench coming from the decaying whale carcass. This led to conversations about how to get rid of it.
In order to disintegrate the majority of the carcass and let scavengers eat the little fragments that remained, officials chose to blow up the whale.
Instead of completing their goal, large portions of its remains were falling heavily on cars, causing major damage. There were no injuries to the crowds, but they were covered in foul smelling blubber and whale parts.
