LOCAL | Escapee From DeSoto County Courthouse Arrested And Now Facing More Charges

A suspect who escaped from the DeSoto County Courthouse in Hernando, Mississippi on Monday morning is currently in custody.

27-year-old Stephen Russell Jr., who was free on bond, was in court for his plea and sentence on a controlled substance charge, according to the Desoto County Sheriff’s Office.

Russell was found guilty of fentanyl trafficking and given a 10-year sentence in state prison, according to the DeSoto County District Attorney’s office.

Russell was reported to experience a medical issue while being led to the transport truck outside the courthouse. When deputies attempted to assist him, he fled.

He was arrested a mile away, according to the DCSO and is anticipated to face more charges.
