LOCAL | General Sessions Clerk Among Those Detained

Memphis Police were called to Crosstown Concourse around 4pm yesterday for a disturbance at Global Café. Reports state that when Amiya Johnson was asked to leave she refused. When MPD asked her to leave, she refused again and as police attempted to arrest her, Donald Batiste began pushing and punching officers. Memphis Police attempted to arrest Batiste and reports state he resisted and continued to punch officers and had to be pepper sprayed. As the ordeal moved outside, bystanders were told to move outside of the police taped off area. General Sessions Court Clerk, Tami Sawyer was handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser. No other arrests were made.

Johnson, 22, and Batiste, 37, were charged with four counts of Assault on a First Responder, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Official Detention.
