Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced at a press conference Friday night that two inmates have died in as many days. Darian Nolan, 33, was transported to the hospital Thursday night for a mental condition and was later pronounced dead while at the hospital. Police records show that Nolan was at 201 Poplar for assault and vandalizing an MLGW service truck last September.
Darin Crawford, 57, was found unresponsive Friday morning in his cell. Crawford was jailed and charged with four counts of assault on first responders during a barricade situation.
Sheriff Floyd Bonner says the department is in need of more deputies. The population at 201 Poplar is 2,540 while 279 detainees are at jail east. At least 60 more deputies are desperately needed at 201. The most recent deaths are in addition to two other deaths at the jail last week. One blamed on an overdose while the other was reported as a suicide.
