The Memphis Fire Department said that three different house fires over the weekend claimed the lives of five people.
A house on Nicholas Street in North Memphis caught fire early on Saturday morning. One person passed away, and the other was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
MFD workers were called to a house fire on Alida Avenue at around 3 a.m. on Sunday; the two people who perished inside were brothers.
Then, at around 4 a.m., MFD was sent to another house fire on Yale Road in Bartlett, where they were told that individuals were trapped inside. They were ultimately not able to be saved.
MFD has determined that unattended candles were the cause of the Saturday fire and they are currently investigating the two Sunday morning fires.
