Malco, the movie theater company and owner of Summer Drive-In, has put the 31 acre property up for sale. There are three movie screens on the property as well as a 3 bedroom, 1 bath apartment over the snack bar and projection building. There’s a long history of Summer Drive-In dating back to 1948. Holiday Inn founder, Kemmons Wilson opened the drive-in and moved it to it’s current location in 1966. Local film series, live entertainment events and first run movies have all been part of the Summer Drive-In as it is one of just a couple hundred drive-ins left in America. In the 1950’s, drive-in movie parks totaled over 4,000 but with the multiple mega screen theaters with custom seating, alcohol sales and wait staff style dinning, drive-in theaters have been dwindling.
