Several vehicles plunged into the Patapsco River in Baltimore Tuesday morning after a cargo ship lost power and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The ship rammed into a support structure of the bridge, resulting the bridge to collapse almost instantaneously. Fire and heavy black smoke followed the collision.
The crash occurred before sunrise and before rush hour morning commute traffic. Rescuers have been searching for survivors, having found two already. There are still some people missing, however.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore spoke to the media shortly after the crash addressing the tragedy and what they are currently doing.
“I have declared a State of Emergency here in Maryland and we are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration,” Moore stated. “We are thankful for the brave men and women who are carrying out efforts to rescue those involved and pray for everyone’s safety. We will remain in close contact with federal, state, and local entities that are carrying out rescue efforts as we continue to assess and respond to this tragedy.”
