LOCAL | MPD Officer and Civilian Killed After Downtown Overnight Wreck

Following a crash Friday morning, a Memphis Police officer and a citizen were killed, with another officer still critically injured.

Demetrice Johnson, 34, is the identified as the deceased MPD officer.

The collision occurred on Danny Thomas Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard just after 3 a.m. It involved a gray Nissan and an MPD cruiser.

Both the Nissan driver and one of the officers were declared deceased. The condition of the other officer is still critical.

In a social media post by Shelby Co. Sheriff Floyd Bonner, he expressed his condolences and prayers.

“I was deeply saddened upon hearing the news of the passing of a Memphis Police Officer this morning in downtown Memphis,” he said. “On behalf of all the men and women of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, I offer our prayers and deepest condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and the Memphis Police Department. We also pray that the other police officer critically injured will have a speedy recovery. The Memphis Police Officer died protecting the citizens of Memphis and Shelby County, and we are truly heartbroken.”
