A bill authorizing a state takeover of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools District (MSCS) was approved by the Tennessee Senate on Tuesday.
The Senate approved SB 0714 by a vote of 26–6. Senator Brent Taylor’s amendment, which establishes a nine-member advisory board, was part of it.
Three governor-appointed members, two senatorial speaker-appointed members, two representatives from the Tennessee House of Representatives, one county mayor-appointed member, and one city mayor-appointed member would comprise that body.
“I don’t trust our school system anymore than I would trust a squirrel in my kitchen.” Senator Brent Taylor said.
